Why Buy Reconditioned?
A brand-new 275-gallon IBC tote typically costs between $300 and $500 depending on the manufacturer and specifications. A reconditioned tote from Fort Wayne IBC Recycling delivers the same functional performance — leak-free containment, proper valve operation, safe stacking, and full forklift compatibility — at 40-60% less.
The savings come from reuse, not compromise. An HDPE IBC bottle has a service life of 5-7 years under normal conditions. Many totes enter our reconditioning program after a single use cycle, meaning they have years of reliable service remaining. Our reconditioning process restores them to a documented quality standard with new seals, tested valves, and verified structural integrity.
Beyond cost, reconditioned totes are the environmentally responsible choice. Manufacturing a new IBC tote requires approximately 130 pounds of virgin HDPE resin, 80 pounds of steel, and significant energy for blow-molding and welding. Reconditioning an existing tote avoids all of that extraction and manufacturing, reducing carbon emissions by up to 85%.
The Reconditioning Process
From intake to final inspection, our six-step reconditioning process ensures every tote meets documented quality standards before it enters our sales inventory.
Intake Inspection
Every tote is visually inspected upon arrival at our Fort Wayne facility. We check for structural damage to the cage, cracks or punctures in the HDPE bottle, valve condition, pallet integrity, and identification plate data. Totes with irreparable damage are separated for material recycling rather than reconditioning.
Residual Drainage & Pre-Rinse
Any remaining product is safely drained and disposed of according to EPA guidelines. The tote undergoes a high-pressure pre-rinse at 1,200 PSI to remove bulk residue, sediment, and loose contaminants from the inner bottle walls, valve assembly, and cap threads.
Triple-Rinse Cleaning
Following ASTM and CPC (Container Packaging Council) standards, each tote receives three full-volume rinse cycles using heated water at 140-180F. For food-grade reconditioning, we use FDA-approved cleaning agents and follow 21 CFR sanitization protocols. Chemical totes may require caustic or solvent-based cleaning depending on previous contents.
Component Replacement
Worn or damaged components are replaced with OEM-spec parts. This includes the 2" butterfly valve gasket, top cap gasket (150mm), valve handle, and any damaged cage welds or pallet boards. All replacement gaskets are EPDM or food-grade silicone depending on application requirements.
Pressure Testing
The sealed tote is pressurized to 1.5 PSI (10.3 kPa) and held for a minimum of 30 minutes. We monitor for any pressure drop that would indicate micro-leaks at the valve seat, cap seal, or bottle walls. Totes that fail pressure testing are rejected from the reconditioning line.
Final Inspection & Grading
A 12-point quality inspection covers bottle clarity, wall thickness (measured ultrasonically), cage straightness, weld integrity, valve operation, cap seal, pallet condition, label removal, odor check, UN marking verification, date-of-manufacture check, and overall cosmetic grade assignment.
12-Point Quality Inspection
Every reconditioned IBC tote must pass all 12 inspection points before it is approved for sale. If a tote fails any single point, it is either reworked to meet the standard or removed from the reconditioning line and sent to our material recycling program. We do not sell totes that do not meet grade.

Food-Grade Reconditioning
Our food-grade reconditioning program follows FDA 21 CFR and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) guidelines to ensure reconditioned totes are safe for contact with food products, beverages, and potable water.
Food-grade totes are processed on a dedicated cleaning line that is never used for chemical or industrial containers. We use FDA-approved cleaning agents, food-safe sanitizers, and replace all gaskets with food-grade silicone or EPDM seals. Each tote receives a certificate of reconditioning documenting the cleaning process and previous contents.
Food-grade reconditioned totes are ideal for operations that need FDA-compliant containers without the cost of buying new. Common applications include juice concentrates, liquid sweeteners, edible oils, flavor compounds, and brewing ingredients.
