What Makes an IBC Tote Food Grade?
Food grade IBC totes are manufactured with FDA-approved high-density polyethylene (HDPE) that meets 21 CFR 177.1520 standards for food contact surfaces. The plastic is specifically formulated to resist leaching and contamination.
When we recondition food grade IBCs, we follow strict sanitization protocols that go beyond standard cleaning. Each tote undergoes a multi-stage process including hot water rinse, food-safe detergent wash, sanitization, and final rinse with potable water.
We maintain chain-of-custody records for all food grade totes, tracking their previous contents to ensure compatibility with your intended use. Totes that previously held non-food products are never sold as food grade, regardless of how thoroughly they are cleaned.

Approved Previous Contents List
Not all used totes qualify as food grade, even if they were originally manufactured for food contact. We only sell reconditioned food-grade totes that previously held approved products. Below is our accepted previous contents list, organized by category.
| Category | Accepted Previous Products | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sweeteners & Syrups | High-fructose corn syrup, liquid sucrose, glucose syrup, maple syrup, agave nectar, molasses, honey | Most common previous contents. Low contamination risk. Excellent candidates for reconditioning. |
| Edible Oils | Soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, corn oil | Oil residue requires hot-water alkaline wash. Slight discoloration of HDPE may occur but does not affect food safety. |
| Beverages | Fruit juice concentrates, wine, beer, water, flavored water, tea concentrates, coffee extracts | Acidic beverages like juice may cause minor staining. Alcohol-based products clean easily. |
| Dairy Products | Liquid milk, cream, whey, liquid butter, cheese brine | Dairy totes require immediate cleaning after emptying. Extra sanitization steps to eliminate bacterial risk. |
| Sauces & Condiments | Soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, salad dressings, marinades | Strongly colored products may stain HDPE. Stained totes are still food-safe but may be downgraded cosmetically. |
| Food-Safe Chemicals | Food-grade glycerin, propylene glycol (USP), citric acid solution, phosphoric acid (food grade), food-grade sanitizers | Must be verified as food-grade formulation. Industrial versions of these chemicals are not accepted. |
| Pharmaceutical / Cosmetic | USP-grade ingredients, cosmetic-grade glycerin, aloe vera extract, essential oil bases | Accepted when documented as USP or food-equivalent grade. Must have SDS showing non-toxic formulation. |
Never Accepted as Food Grade
Totes that previously held industrial chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, petroleum products, paints, inks, dyes, solvents, or any non-food-grade substance are permanently excluded from our food-grade inventory, regardless of cleaning. These totes may be available in our standard or industrial categories instead.
Cleaning Certification Process
Every food-grade IBC tote we sell goes through our rigorous 8-step cleaning and certification process. This is not a simple rinse. It is a documented, repeatable protocol designed to meet FDA and food industry standards.
Intake & Documentation
Each tote is logged with its serial number, manufacturer, date of manufacture, and previous contents. We verify chain-of-custody documentation from the seller. Totes without known history are rejected from the food-grade program.
Visual Pre-Inspection
Before cleaning begins, we inspect the bottle interior for cracks, deep scratches, warping, or embedded stains that cannot be removed. Totes that fail pre-inspection are diverted to our industrial or recycling streams.
Triple Rinse (Potable Water)
The tote undergoes three consecutive rinses with potable water at 120F to remove loose residue. Each rinse uses clean water; we do not recirculate rinse water between stages. Drainage is inspected after each rinse.
Alkaline Detergent Wash
A food-safe alkaline detergent solution at 150F-160F is circulated through the tote for a minimum of 15 minutes using our automated wash system. The detergent breaks down organic residues including oils, sugars, and proteins.
High-Pressure Rinse
After the detergent wash, a high-pressure potable water rinse at 1,500 PSI removes all detergent residue and any remaining contaminants. The spray nozzle rotates 360 degrees inside the tote to reach every surface.
Sanitization
A food-grade sanitizer (peracetic acid or chlorine dioxide at approved concentrations) is applied to all interior surfaces. The sanitizer is left in contact for a minimum dwell time per manufacturer specifications before final rinsing.
Final Rinse & Drying
A final rinse with potable water removes all sanitizer residue. The tote is then air-dried in a clean, covered area. We do not use compressed air (which can introduce oil or moisture contamination) for drying.
Post-Clean Inspection & Certification
A trained inspector performs a final visual and odor inspection. The valve and gasket are replaced with new food-grade components. A certificate of cleaning is generated with the tote serial number, cleaning date, and inspector signature.
Food & Beverage Industry Applications
Our food-grade IBC totes are used by operations of every size, from small craft producers to large-scale food manufacturers. Here are the industries and use cases where reconditioned food-grade totes deliver the most value.
Craft Beverage Production
Wineries, craft breweries, distilleries, and cideries use food-grade IBC totes for bulk ingredient storage, fermentation overflow, and finished product holding before bottling. The 275-gallon size is ideal for small-batch production runs.
Wine must storage, beer wort transfer, spirits dilution water, cider aging, kombucha brewing
Commercial Food Manufacturing
Large-scale food producers use IBC totes to receive and store liquid ingredients from suppliers. Totes are more cost-effective than dedicated tanks for ingredients used in moderate volumes or seasonal production.
Soybean oil receiving, corn syrup storage, liquid egg whites, flavoring concentrates, liquid sugar
Sauce & Condiment Production
Hot sauce, BBQ sauce, salad dressing, and condiment makers use totes for both raw ingredient storage and finished product bulk holding. The valve discharge simplifies metered dispensing into filling lines.
Vinegar storage, tomato concentrate, mustard base, soy sauce bulk receiving, marinade mixing
Dairy & Dairy Alternatives
Dairy processors use totes for whey protein liquid, cream separation, and milk transfer between processing stages. Plant-based dairy producers use them for oat, almond, and soy milk base ingredients.
Liquid whey transport, cream holding, milk permeate, oat milk base, almond slurry
Maple Syrup & Honey Production
Sugarbush operations collect sap in IBC totes in the field, then use them for bulk syrup storage after evaporation. Beekeepers use totes for bulk honey storage and settling before packaging.
Maple sap collection, finished syrup storage, bulk honey settling, beeswax rendering water
Agriculture & Farm Operations
Farms use food-grade totes for potable livestock water, organic liquid fertilizer storage, and food-grade crop treatments. The portable nature of IBC totes makes them ideal for field deployment.
Livestock drinking water, organic foliar sprays, molasses-based feed supplements, fish emulsion fertilizer
Ordering Food Grade Totes
To ensure we match you with the right food-grade IBC totes for your application, here is the information we need from you when you place an order. The more detail you provide, the faster we can fill your request.
What product will you be storing or transporting?
We need to know the specific product so we can match you with a tote that previously held compatible contents. For example, if you are storing maple syrup, we will source totes that previously held sweeteners or similar products. This is the single most important piece of information for food-grade orders.
What size do you need: 275 gallon or 330 gallon?
The 275-gallon tote is the most common and has the largest available inventory. The 330-gallon tote provides about 20% more capacity in a slightly taller package. Both fit standard 48" x 40" pallet footprints. If you are unsure, our team can help you choose based on your space constraints and volume needs.
How many totes do you need, and is this a one-time or recurring order?
Quantity affects pricing and lead time. One-off orders of 1-5 totes can often ship same-day from stock. Larger orders of 10+ may require a few days to source and clean to spec. Recurring orders can be set up on a schedule with guaranteed inventory and preferential pricing.
Do you need new valves, liners, or other accessories pre-installed?
We can install new food-grade butterfly valves, ball valves, camlock adapters, drop-in liners, or vented caps before shipping. Pre-installation saves you time on-site and ensures all components are food-grade rated and properly sealed.
Do you need delivery, or will you arrange your own pickup?
We deliver throughout Indiana and surrounding states with our own fleet. For local customers in the Fort Wayne metro area, we also offer will-call pickup at our facility. Delivery pricing depends on distance, volume, and scheduling flexibility.
Do you require specific documentation or certificates?
Every food-grade tote ships with our standard certificate of cleaning. If your operation requires additional documentation such as lot-specific cleaning records, material safety data sheets for cleaning agents used, or letters of compliance for auditors, let us know upfront and we will prepare everything with your order.
Important Considerations
Previous Contents Matter
Even with thorough cleaning, we recommend that food grade totes only be reused for the same or compatible product categories. A tote that previously held corn syrup should not be used for drinking water without proper reconditioning and certification.
Not All Used Totes Are Food Safe
A tote that was originally manufactured as food grade but has since been used for industrial chemicals is no longer considered food safe. We never misrepresent the history of our totes.
Regulatory Compliance
Depending on your application, you may need to meet specific FDA, USDA, or state regulations. We can provide documentation and guidance to help ensure your IBC setup meets all applicable requirements.
